Thunder storms and torrential rain all week could not stop this fixture going ahead and with a bit of reshuffling the match was played in a beautifully sunny Longmeadows. For the second week in a row Raheny provided the opposition. While our hurlers were up against it last week, the footballers put on a master class from start to finish this week.
Raheny arrived with depleted numbers and for a change St Brendan’s were able to provide some players to the opposition to enable the game to go ahead. A big thanks to Sean (who even scored against St Brendan’s) and Jake who tried their hearts out for the Raheny boys.
A rigorous warm up set the tone for the match and the reigning player of the week, PJ, continued where he left off last week with a commanding performance in the St Brendan’s defence. Even a first half injury to Jeremy, who soldiered on bravely, did not stop St Brendan’s from racing into an early lead. Tom, playing in the forward line, was wreaking havoc in the Raheny defence and helped himself to 3 first half points. John, playing in the back line, was on a mission to cover every blade of grass on the pitch (I think he succeeded!) and he also chipped in with a point - as well as somehow taking care of his defensive duties. Raheny also battled bravely and the first half ended with a score of St Brendan’s 0-4 (12) – Raheny 1-2 (7).
The sun came out for the second half and both teams continued to battle hard. Some positional changes saw Jack move into midfield with Billy recovered enough to take his place in goals. Tom and Daniel in defence for the second half formed a strong partnership and worked well together to thwart most of the Raheny attacks. Raheny did get an early point to bring them right back into the contest but towards the end of the half St Brendan’s pulled away with some great scores coming from Seamus, Jack and John. With time almost up the result was sealed by a fine goal from Seamus. Final score: St Brendan’s 1-8 (25) – Raheny 2-5 (17).
Team: Jack, PJ, John, Seamus, Jeremy, Daniel, Tom, Billy (Jake and Sean)
